Many Opportunities for Unemployed to Update
Their Job Skills Online– For Free
(Bridgeport, CT) High unemployment has led many to try to update their work skills in an attempt to be more competitive in the job market. While many unemployed have lamented the high cost of training at technical training schools, community colleges and universities, others have found a wealth of free training available online. Informal tutorials, videos and even classes are available on hundreds of job related topics.
According to Mark Lassoff, president of LearnToProgram.TV a technical training firm that provides free web development and programming tutorials online, free job training is just a Google search away. ”For just about any topic you can search for tutorials, how-to’s and instructional videos using Google or Yahoo’s search engines,” says Lassoff, “There are even sites like HowCast.com that provide instruction on everything from Microsoft Excel pivot tables to employee supervision.”
Another popular instructional web site is Graspr.com. Graspr.com, which is an instructional video network, places instructional videos hosted on the site in several categories including car maintenance, pet grooming and web design. For those trying to develop computer related skills, Tutorialized.com is a popular destination. Tutorialized presents written, step-by-step tutorials on computer graphics, web design, business programming and databases.
The instructional videos and tutorials that are found online are most often posted by experts who want to share their expertise with others. In one series of videos found on eHow.com, another instructional video site, Boston based painter Brendan Killian produced over twenty videos about interior painting.
The quality of the tutorials and videos available online varies. Some rival professional instruction while others are more informal. High quality productions are very common, however. Many of the sites that host tutorials and instructional videos allow users to review the videos, and much of the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. One online review stated that the tutorial provide a better explanation than the user’s college professor.
Lassoff, who has produced videos shown on both HowCast.com,YouTube.com, and other sites, believes that producing the free videos and written tutorials can lead to actual paid work for experts. ”When you produce an instructional video or write a tutorial it gets your name out there. I have had videos that I’ve posted online lead to corporate training opportunities at Fortune 500 companies,” says Lassoff, “But, it’s also gratifying to know that the videos I produce may help some improve their skills and even get a job.”
